Unpacking White Privilege
A Healthy Approach to Cultural Humility Participants in this 2-class series will have the opportunity to explore what it means to have the privilege of whiteness. This work is illuminating and introspective. Much like light passing through a prism which is refracted in different color tones when viewed from different angles. This 2-course class will help shed light on how some of the ordinary characteristics associated with whiteness correlate with social privilege. This is challenging work – as people who self-identify as white, or are identified by others as white, we are often unaware that we are living with social privilege. There is sometimes a sense of being called to task for actions or words that we think of as ordinary. What are some of the cultural characteristics of living a life of social privilege? What are some of the social norms that white people in the United States take for granted? Social norms that may not be accessible to people from other racial or ethnic backgrounds? What we will learn is that not everyone has access to this form of “ordinary.”
