About

Sacramento Dharma Center was created to develop and maintain a dedicated space that would provide support for meditation-based Buddhist groups in the Sacramento area. Incorporated in March of 2012, and located at 3111 Wissemann Drive, the Center is a nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation operated exclusively as a California Charitable 501(c)(3) Corporation.

Our Mission

The Sacramento Dharma Center’s mission is to create a sanctuary for meditation and Buddha’s teachings, welcoming everyone who seeks to end suffering and live in harmony.

Our Vision

We envision the Sacramento Dharma Center as an inclusive and accessible community resource available to all people who wish to encounter Buddha’s teachings, enjoy the benefits of meditation practice, practice with a sangha, and participate in a Buddhist tradition of their choice. We provide a home for the Resident Sanghas; Sacramento Buddhist Meditation Group (SBMG), Sacramento Insight Meditation (SIM) and Valley Streams Zen Sangha (VSZS) as well as other Buddhist groups. When not reserved for a specific use, the meditation hall is available for individual sitting. The Center houses supportive and informational resources including a library, which are available to the general public.

Values Statement

We embrace the practice of mindfulness and the cultivation of generosity, ethical conduct, compassion, and wisdom. With the intention to benefit the whole community, we welcome everyone who seeks to end suffering and live in harmony.

Introducing our Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors is made up of representatives from our three founding Sanghas. The all volunteer Board manages the property, facilitates scheduling, and provides a library and other support services for the sustaining Sanghas. We meet monthly and serve on several subcommittees, along with other volunteers, working on these organizational issues and building management.

Our Directors also continue their fund-raising activities in support of the Center which is financed in two ways. We receive rental payments from the sustaining Sanghas, which covers our mortgage payments, and all other expenses are covered by donations from our generous supporters.

Home is often defined as a familiar or usual setting or a congenial environment. The Sacramento Dharma Center is a most cherished home for me. There were so many years that our sanghas had to exist as nomads seeking a home of our own.  It finally happened in 2016 (as a result of the determination, cooperation and good will of our 3 sanghas). Since then, SDC continues to be a supportive and meaningful gift to me and the Sacramento community. I volunteer my service to my sangha and SDC for a similar reason to why I grow much of my own vegetables and fruit.  Like home grown food, the aliveness of Dhamma in my life is sweeter and more nourishing when I give of my time and energy to contribute to SDC and our sanghas' growth and vibrancy. She is a representive for SBMG.

Joe Countryman

Joe is a member of the Dharmata Foundation that supports Anam Thubten and his teaching, and is past president of the Sacramento Buddhist Meditation Group Board. His intention for serving on the Dharma Center Board is to fully support the implementation of the Center’s mission in providing a beautiful, harmonious and stable place for Buddhist’s of all stripes to practice and to engage in social interaction with other Buddhists. He is looking forward to being involved with the envisioning process, helping with physical building issues, and monitoring the financial integrity of the organization. He enjoys working with members of all three resident Sanghas and welcomes the opportunity to enhance a cooperative and harmonious working relationship with all of the Board members.

Angela Scarlett

Being of service is a key part of who Angela is and she wishes to support SDC's mission and its next stage of growth. She is a state worker with a strong meditation practice and professional background in software and database use. She initially started studying Buddhism in her early twenties and finally established a more regular practice when she started attending SBMG in 2006. Her practice is a core part of her identity and ethical reasoning. Angela previously served on the SBMG board for four years, stepping down in 2014. As of 2018, she continues to support communications for both the Sacramento Buddhist Meditation Group and the Sacramento American Association of University Women with newsletter design, website content, social media content, Eventbrite administrative support and occasional graphic design.

Diane Wilde

Diane has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990, and was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded and is a board member of Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3). At BP3 she is a volunteer chaplain and coordinates 45 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program, and is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies. She graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. In 2015 she was lay-ordained at Insight Meditation Center by her teacher Gil Fronsdal as a Buddhist minister.

Jay Nair

Serving on the SDC board is an opportunity to sustain my practice and to work alongside some of the most passionate dharma practitioners. It's really fun to make new friends who are in the same path, rejoice in their growth, and the growth of sangha. As an immigrant, it is also an opportunity to give back to the country and the community that I call home. Jay is a representative for Sacramento Buddhist Meditation Group (SBMG).

Sarah O'Gara

I am a new SDC board member but have served on Valley Streams Zen Sangha board since 2014. My intention is to support SDC’s organizational efforts and the physical structure that makes it possible to create sangha. As SDC transitions from its founders’ leadership and the growing pains of a new organization, the challenges of creating a self-sustaining entity are formidable. This requires a vibrant, diverse Board and secure recurring funding sources. My third “sangha” is a group of three ladies who tromp through the high Sierra meadows in search of rare plants. Sarah is a representative from Valley Streams Zen Sangha (VSZS).

We closed escrow on the wonderful property on Wissemann Drive on June 13, 2016. The site was ready for occupancy by the sustaining Sanghas in the fall. On November 6 th the three sustaining Sanghas joined together to dedicate the Center as a sanctuary for Buddha's teaching and meditation practice. Each Sangha provides weekly programs, weekend retreats, weekday morning meditation periods, and various other related classes and activities. The building has nearly 8,000 sq feet including a meditation hall, meeting rooms, offices, kitchen, dining room, library, and is situated on 1.7 acres. We are currently engaged in an envisioning process with our Sanghas to determine what improvements will be needed for the continued best use of the property for our community.
